Research Memo #3
Hypothesis:
My research memo #3 was mostly a way to show my viewers/followers what it is like to go through life with GAD. I found videos to answer my own personal questions and my research questions. These videos also will help those viewers of mine that do not really know what anxiety attacks and GAD are. The main questions of mine answered and shown in my videos are "what do other people suffering from GAD go through?", "how do anxiety manifestations differ from each person?", and "do physical displays of anxiety differ between males and females?". This far into my research I strongly believe that females suffer from anxiety more so than males.
Results:
(videos put up on my blog)The videos I have selected are a True Life segment, a medical video about anxiety and panic attacks, and someone having an anxiety attack to show my followers what one actually is like.
Data Analysis:
From my video results it shows the main symptoms/manifestations of anxiety displayed during an anxiety attack. I learned that many people feel the same way I do when it comes to the medication for GAD, that there should be more options. My videos also show mostly females going through these troubles, supporting that females are more likely to suffer from these tragic disorders.
Conclusion:
I am very satisfied with the research I have collected thus far. I have learned a lot that I can put forth in my journey with anxiety as well as helping others become informed in a rapidly spreading disorder. As more and more people are diagonosed with anxiety disorders, it is important to be aware of its effects and symptoms to help those around you.
Follow up:
I would really like to continue on with my research, adding more and more information to my blog as I go. It has already answered most of my questions and provided me with information that I had never thought of before.

Research Memo #2
Hypothesis:
What is anxiety characterized as? What are the known, common physical manifestations? Generalized anxiety disorder (or GAD) is characterized by excessive, exaggerated anxiety and worry about everyday life events with no obvious reasons for worry. People with symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder tend to always expect disaster and can't stop worrying about health, money, family, work, or school. In people with GAD, the worry usually is unrealistic for the situation. In my research I found out the more common displays of anxiety/ GAD.
Context:
I still focused on the answers from my surveys and used some credible websites that stated displays that doctors have found to be the most common. My websites I have listed in my preminary links post have really helped me in figuring out what manifestations people have besides my own. They have taught me that there are many, many more physical showings of anxiety during anxiety attacks than I was even aware of. One of my articles, http://www.medicinenet.com/anxiety/article.htm, has really shown me how even the envionment the person is in can affect what their symptoms are. Each of my articles and websites have given me medical information on GAD and a variety of opinions on whether the symptoms are different between sexes or just differ from person to person. In research memo #3 and to futher my research I am going to go through videos and interviews of people talking about or explaining their anxiety disorder and its manifestations.
Results:
Most of the common displays of an anxiety attack or anxiety itself occur almost immediately once the person starts to excessively worry about a situation. From my personal experiences I start out by getting headaches and becoming very tense. Feelings from there normally just esculate in the person and get more intense, I have noticed from experience and my research.
I also found interesting facts such as this below:
The exact cause of GAD is not fully known, but a number offactors, including genetics, brain chemistry and environmental stresses, appear to contribute to its development.
Conclusion:
I have found out a lot of information just from a few websites and medical blogs that I had never known before now. This research thus far has helped me to grow in better understanding what I struggle with on a day to day basis.
Follow Up:
I would like to continue my research further by finding videos of people who have GAD describing what they go through to help my audience and myself connect with them and to give my followers a better understanding of what it is like to go through life having this kind of road block in your path.

- Genetics: Some research suggests that family history plays a part in increasing the likelihood that a person will develop GAD. This means that the tendency to develop GAD may be passed on in families.
- Brain chemistry: GAD has been associated with abnormal levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are special chemical messengers that help move information from nerve cell to nerve cell. If the neurotransmitters are out of balance, messages cannot get through the brain properly. This can alter the way the brain reacts in certain situations, leading to anxiety.
- Environmental factors: Trauma and stressful events, such as abuse, the death of a loved one, divorce, changing jobs or schools, may lead to GAD. GAD also may become worse during periods of stress. The use of and withdrawal from addictive substances, including alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, can also worsen anxiety. (Found on http://www.medicinenet.com/anxiety/article.htm)

Research Memo 1
Hypothesis:
What are common displays pretaining to anxiety? Does GAD differ between sexes? GAD is an unfortunate disorder also known as General Anxiety Disorder. This disorder affects 40 million people in the United States. Through personal experience with anxiety I have found my most frequent manifestations are shaking, convulsing, and not being able to breath. The feeling of terror and getting squeamish when one occurs are also common indications I experience. I'm unsure if the manifestations differ between males and females though, even if it is a little different for each person. Much of our society does not receive treatment for GAD for fear of side effects from the medicines. Should there be more options to help treat this disorder? In my opinion people should have more options out there as treatment or for at least helping them better control their anxiety instead of an all or nothing treatment, like they have today.
Context:
In my quest to answer my questions about anxiety's manifestations I am requesting help, targeting, persons who are between14 and18 years old that suffer from GAD or Social Anxiety Disorder. Having people in this specific group answer my questions will help me get a better understanding of all sorts of different ways anxiety affects each person individually and any unknown showings I myself have not experienced. Picking these types of citizens will be reliable for they deal with GAD on a daily basis, no one would know more about it than people that have to live with it.
Results: Just yes/no questions graphed.
Yes/No questions: | Males | Females |
Experienced anxiety | Yes: 14/25 No: 11/25 | Yes: 25/25 |
Know someone who has GAD | Yes: 25/25 | Yes: 22/25 No: 3/25 |
Have GAD or any anxiety disorders | Yes: 17/25 No: 8/25 | Yes: 23/25 No: 2/25 |
Experienced/witnessed an anxiety attack | Yes: 19/25 No: 6/25 | Yes: 24/25 No: 1/25 |
Data Analysis:
To better show any differences between males and females with anxiety I surveyed 25 males and 25 females the same survey, equaling up 50 total. My table above shows survey questions I went around and asked those in my target group. Out of 50 surveys I passed out, 39 people have experienced anxiety. From the people I asked more girls experience anxiety than boys. From those same people everyone, excluding 3 females who answered that they knew someone with General Anxiety Disorder, 90% of them answered that they themselves have GAD or another type of anxiety disorder. Throughout my research with my surveys I have still come to see that females are tending to experience anxiety more than males thus far.
Conclusion:
This far into my research I have proved that females are more likely to have anxiety disorders than males. A question on my survey; "If you have answered yes to having an anxiety disorder, what are your common manifestations of it?", has given me some perspective on what the most common physical displays for males and females are. Most people seem to be experiencing the same manifestations as I do.
Follow Up:
For research memo #2 I would like to continue on with surveys, maybe asking more in depth questions. The most important research question of mine is still lingering on what the most common manifestations are.

Questions
- How does anxiety manifest itself differently in each person?
- What are the most common manifestations?
- Should there be more options for anxiety treatment?
- Which situations are known to cause people with GAD the most anxiety?

Preliminay Links;
This website was created by a non-profit organization to help people better understand disorders and to help those who have the disorders find help. It is useful because it lists tons of information I need for my research questions, stating the signs, treatment, and symptoms of GAD (general anxiety disorder).
This website is an online healthcare media publishing site that provides information on medical disorders and diseases, such as GAD. It gives in depth description of GAD and its symptoms along with what may be some causes of this disorder.
This website is made up of physicians, award-winning journalists, and trained community moderators. It gives many different types of anxiety disorders, along with GAD, and many different effects/symptoms for these disorders.
The website; medicalnewstoday.com is owned by MediLexicon International Ltd, with head offices of United Kingdom. It gives a more insightful definition of anxiety and its many different disorders.
The story behind my topic...
Anxiety is like a monster that gets a grasp on everyone at some point in their lives. We have all dealt with that tense, helpless feeling before. Anxiety is defined as a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. Once someone starts to get anxious, they cannot control it. It is like a plane leaving the terminal, once they start getting anxious, they cannot stop. Personally, for me, it gets so bad that I start to convulse, shake, and I can barely breathe; this is known as an anxiety attack. It is one of the scariest things I have to go through. People with really bad anxiety usually get diagnosed with GAD (General Anxiety Disorder). Most people, who are experiencing physical manifestations of anxiety, shake uncontrollably, get jittery, get nauseated, and experience dizziness. This disorder affects 40 million people in the United States and I intend to do more research for myself and others to further understand anxiety and its manifestations.
